Harper - 427 days

Big day for little Harper. First official steps at 5:02pm. I was sitting in our bed working on  my laptop when Melanie squealed with excitement from the living room. I jumped out of bed and raced to the living room to see Harper bursting with pride and joy. Although, she was sitting on the floor, one could tell that Harper was thrilled with her first steps.

I quickly repositioned Harper between my legs and pointed her towards Melanie. Perhaps other babies take one or two steps before they tumble into a heap. But to my utter amazement, Harper took five confident steps towards Melanie. I felt ebullient watching Harper and Melanie hug.

Not a bad day to start this account of my life with Harper. My goal is to capture a bit of each day with Harper. The high and the lows. But mostly, I plan to use this space to document our little adventures, Harper’s funny expressions and her boundless curiosity. I plan to add photos and other reminders of each day so one day, when my memory fails me, I can share the little details that build the foundation of our life.

Earlier in the day, Indie, Harper’s nanny watched her for a few hours. Around 12:30pm, after spending time in Riverside Park, Harper was so exhausted from her strenuous play, she went to sleep as I gave her a bottle. Later, after the first steps, I fed her dinner, gave her a bath, and put her to sleep while Melanie went to Yoga.

Tomorrow is going to be a wonderful day filled with tentative steps and lots of laughter. Why? This little girl seems to giggle every time she falls to the ground.
